8 Questions To Ask Your Wedding DJ

  |   weddings

You just got engaged, congratulations! For the next few months you’re going to be jam packed with food tasting, venue tours, vendor meetings, and hours of planning. Among one of the things you’ll need to do is find someone to provide music for your wedding.

According to WeddingWire, there was a 100% increase of couples that hired a DJ since 2007. If you are like most couples, finding a wedding DJ is at the top of your list. You need to start setting up meetings with DJs now, and seeing who is the right fit for you. With that, we’ve compiled a list of questions to ask your wedding DJ while interviewing them.

Are you available on my date?

Make sure the DJ is available on your date. If you’re set on the DJ that you want, make sure they are available on your date. Sometimes they book fast depending on the time of year or demand. This is a great opportunity to ask what they require to book and confirm the date. It will usually consist of contract signing and some kind of deposit.

What is your DJ style?

This can be interpreted a few different ways. You need to find out what kind of DJ they are. Are they fun and outgoing, while being professional? Are they a good match for the vibe you want at your wedding? This question is great to find out if the DJ will fit what you’re looking for.

Do you go off of a playlist, or do you play to the crowd?

This question will let you know how the DJ handles the dance floor. Many wedding DJs just push play and let a playlist ride out. Others (like us), play to the crowd and make sure that each song is a crowd pleaser since they have a good sense of who is on the dance floor.

Are you familiar with my venue?

Find out if the DJ has played at your venue. If they have, then there’s a good chance they know how to load in, where they will be set up, and where they can put speakers and lighting equipment. This will also give them a heads up of what equipment to bring and what will look best in that venue.

Is set up and break down included in price?

This one is self explanatory, but an important questions none-the-less. We’ve heard stories of DJ companies trying to add hidden fees for setup and break down. Don’t let them hit you with hidden fees!

Do you have video of past weddings?

It’s always good to see if your DJ has visuals of past work. Videos will help you take a look at their set up, how they interact with guests, and how the dance floor looks. This may also show how neat they are with their set up and attire.

What other services do you offer?

Instead of hunting down many different vendors, ask the DJ what services they offer. You may find that the DJ can provide many services aside from playing music. Some additional services they may offer are planning, lighting, pipe and drape, and decor. It never hurts to ask!

What will you wear?

Although this question has caught us off guard since we always wear a suit and tie, it brings up a valid point. Will your DJ play their part in your wedding or will they look out of place. The last thing you’d want is for your DJ to show up in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts to perform at your high-end classy wedding. It’s ok to request that your DJ dress a certain way too. Some examples are sports jerseys for a sports loving couples and wedding theme. Or maybe your wedding is being held at a countryside property where suit and ties may seem out of place. Maybe it’s a superhero theme. Either way, “what will you wear”, and “would you be willing to wear…” are perfectly acceptable questions to ask your wedding DJ.

Final thoughts…

There’s so much that goes into planning a wedding. Narrowing down your DJ is one of the biggest things on your checklist to do. Above, are a few questions to ask your wedding DJ before you book them. Think of these as interview questions. Asking the right questions can help you find the perfect DJ for your big day.
